Damascus, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) Syria prepares for a new type of
elections in its 14 provinces today, in which 42,889 candidates will
compete for the 17,588 administrative posts.
These elections are held under the new electoral law, enacted as
part of the integral reform program promoted by the government of
President Bashar al-Assad, and includes the participation of political
opposition leaders, whose parties had been officially registered
according to new decree-laws.
According The National Electoral Council, 9,849 polling stations with
two independent voting booths each one have been established, so that
people can vote in secret and private in 154 cities and 502 towns, in
681 municipalities of the country.
The posts of 1337 administrative units of the Popular Councils
(governments) will be voted, including the municipal and provincial
ones.
