Caracas, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela''s Telecommunications Council fined Globovision TV Network on Tuesday for inciting unrest in the people with their coverage of events in El Rodeo 1 and 2 prison in June, 2011.

The broadcaster must pay 9.3 million bolivars (2.16 million USD), which accounts for 7.5 percent of gross revenues received during the 2010 fiscal year, Conatel Director Pedro Maldonado told reporters.

According to the official, a committee from the company determined that Globovision committed a fault by supporting crime during the broadcasts from June 16-19 in the vicinity of the penitentiary, in the state of Miranda.

Maldonado said the TV channel broadcast the 18 most heartfelt and desperate statements and repeated them almost 300 times, but kept silent about the constant interventions by authorities on the progress of negotiations with the prisoners.

Conatel's measure is immediately enforceable and closed the administrative record opened on June 30 to investigate Globovision's coverage of the prison events.

Maldonado said it does not involve the temporary suspension of Globovision, adding that the broadcaster can go to the courts to appeal the ruling.
