Mass Mobilization in West Bank for Palestine Statehood
Ramalah, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of people rallied in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday to demand that the UN recognize Palestine as an independent state, and to oppose U.S. threats to veto the initiative.
A huge mobilization took place beginning early today in downtown Ramallah, headquarters of the Palestine National Authority (PNA), where protesters held up banners and placards opposing the U.S. diplomatic offensive.
The demonstration included students, workers, activists, and members of different political organizations, who began their protest with a visit to the memorial of PNA founder Yasser Arafat and then marched through various streets of the city.
According to organizers, the demonstration gave Israeli authorities a preview of what would occur on Sept. 23 at the UN, when Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas will present his statehood request to the Security Council.
In Ramallah's central square, speakers highlighted the majority support from the international community for accepting Palestine as a full UN member, and condemned the pressure brought by U.S. President Barack Obama, along his threat of using the veto.
