Shock Wave Coming: 'Gold & currencies basket to substitute US dollar'

Posted: 07 Aug 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Higher borrowing costs, weakening business and consumer confidence as well as slimmer chances of recovery - it's the potential ripple effect for the United States, after its top-tier AAA credit rating was cut by one notch. Standard & Poor's took the unprecedented move of dropping America's ranking to AA+ in its outlook. White House officials are on the defensive - saying there's a two-trillion-dollar mistake. S&P admitted that, but is sticking with its decision, which it says is objective. It's despite the last-minute debt deal which narrowly rescued the country from default. But the damage was already done, as the political haggling undermined investors trust. Economist Max Fraad Wolff says brace yourself for a stock market rollercoaster on Monday.

Nationalist-Jewish

The bill introduced by 40 MKs headed by Kadima's Avi Dichter for a new Basic Law establishing Israel as the "national home of the Jewish people" effectively shatters Israel's fragile definition as a Jewish, democratic state. The bill replaces it with a definition that is nationalist and religious; the term "national home" stands in opposition to rationalist Zionism. Theodor Herzl said in Basel that the Zionists sought to create a "home for the Jewish people in Eretz Yisrael, secured by public law." The "home for the Jewish people," according to Dichter and company, is the opposite of this aim. It is all withdrawal in the name of extreme, nationalist "Judaism."

The miracle of the rebellion

It happened not only when it was least expected, but also from the least expected quarter. Just when we had another Generation X, a lost and purposeless generation, blind, complacent and sunk in its own blandness, the protest movement came along. It sprang from a generation that was raised on idiotic game shows on commercial television that have no room for meaningful debate; on the club scene, another wasteland when it comes to serious talk because of the noise; and on bars and cafes, whose denizens seem to care only about the trivial. It was raised on a school system that has failed to cope with our youth's terrible ignorance and with colleges and universities that have turned into grade stores; on media that brainwash, encourage our baser instincts and spread fear; and on student unions that care only about tuition fees and the singers who perform on Students' Day.

Jewish solidarity makes Israeli democracy stronger

The cab driver faithfully played his role as the stereotypical, old-fashioned man of the people. He was right-wing, Mizrahi (of Middle Eastern or North African origin ) and traditionally religious. He was a fan of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ("a bastard, a snake," he called him affectionately ) and an enthusiastic supporter of all the anti-left bills now before the Knesset. He expressed his uncomplimentary opinion of the leftists. "Tell me," I said to him, "would you really like to put them in prison, those leftists?" "Prison?" the driver asked in surprise. "No, of course not. You're overdoing it."

At times it seems as though the leadership of the defense establishment views what is happening in the country from a different planet. The Chief of Staff and the General Staff are not that interested in the budget for welfare, health or housing. As far as they are concerned, let the ministers worry about finding ways of increasing funding in those areas - as long as they do not touch the defense budget.

Pain vs Gain: 'UK torture probe shockingly secret'

Posted: 06 Aug 2011 07:34 AM PDT

British intelligence services have allegedly been violating international law for almost a decade. A leaked top-secret document suggests agents were permitted to use information taken from prisoners tortured overseas. Officers were asked to 'balance' how much they expected detainees to suffer against the value of the information they could get. They were also given political protection from prosecution. Human rights activists are demanding an open and fair inquiry, but fear their questions will be met with a wall of silence, as Tara Lyle from Amnesty International explains.
