| Famine in the Horn of Africa: Malthus beware Posted: 23 Aug 2011 02:19 AM PDT ![]() With nearly 12m people at risk of starvation in a region whose population has doubled in the past 24 years, one might assume that these two factors are causally related in the Horn of Africa. Ever since the British philosopher Thomas Malthus wrote "An Essay on the Principle of Population" in 1798, we have been concerned that human population growth will outstrip the available food supply. While the current crisis in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya would appear to be perfect proof of the Malthusian scenario, we must be careful not to make overly simplistic assumptions. |

Explosions have been heard near the Libyan leader's compound as the fight for Tripoli rages for a third day. But no one seems to know where Colonel Gaddafi is. And heavy clashes between the rebels and government forces have been reported in central parts of Tripoli including around a hospital. Latest footage from the capital shows explosions possibly caused by NATO bombing raids. Casualties are said to be mounting after intense fighting overnight, although electricity in Tripoli has been restored after hours of blackout.
Asia Times correspondent Pepe Escobar believes as soon as Western countries get Libyan oil contracts they'll want boots on the ground to secure them...
Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi's son and one-time heir apparent Saif al-Islam is free despite earlier claims confirmed by the International Criminal Court and leaders of Libya's National Transitional Council that he had been detained by rebel forces. Seif appeared early on Tuesday morning at the Rixos hotel in Tripoli, where foreign journalists are staying under the close watch of Gaddafi regime minders. He then took reporters in a convoy on a drive through parts of the city under the regime's control. The convoy ended up outside Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound, where at least one hundred men were waiting in lines for guns to be distributed to volunteers to defend the regime. Greeting cheering supporters at the compound, Seif gave a defiant interview, accusing NATO and the West of sabotaging communications and spreading chaos and fear.
British intelligence has reportedly played a key role in the latest push on Tripoli by rebels. According to a report in the UK daily, the Telegraph, MI6 officers advised the rebels on the strategy behind the operation, in a plan drawn up weeks ago.
The fight is not over in Tripoli but the carve-up of Libya's vast oil riches - the biggest in Africa - is already beginning. The Italian Foreign Minister fired the starting gun, saying Italy's ENI oil company will play the number one role in the region. And as RT's Laura Emmett reports, the service won't come cheap for the Libyan people.

An information blackout appears to have descended on Libya - as for hours there has been no significant updates coming from Tripoli. The hotel where the international journalists have been staying is left without electricity and communication. Earlier the story took a major twist when Colonel Gaddafi's son made an appearance in central Tripoli, refuting rebels' claims that he'd been arrested. During a brief window when power was restored, we managed to speak on the phone with independent journalist Lizzie Phelan who saw Saif Gaddafi herself.
Colonel Gaddafi's son has made an appearance in central Tripoli, refuting rebels' claims that he'd been arrested. He came to speak with international journalists who are still trapped in a hotel without electricity and communications. Meanwhile doubts are cast over whether a rebel victory would actually leave the Libyan people in control of their destiny, as experts point to Egypt where those who fought for the revolution, ended up with a government they didn't choose. Eric Margolis - war correspondent, columnist and author from Toronto, Canada says we are lond way from seeing anything like democracy in Libya.
The deepening economic crises in Europe and the United States are provoking contrasting socio-political responses from the working and middle classes. In Europe, especially among the Mediterranean countries (Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy) unemployed youth, workers and lower middle class public employees have organized a series of general strikes, occupations of public plazas and other forms of direct action. At the same time, the middle class, private-sector employees and small business people have turned to the "hard right" and elected, or are on the verge of electing, reactionary prime ministers in Portugal, Spain, Greece and perhaps even in Italy. In other words, the deepening crises has polarized Southern Europe: strengthening the institutional power of the hard right while increasing the strength of the extra-parliamentary left in mobilizing 'street power'.
The tyrannical rule under Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, in power for 42 years, has practically run its course as the Libyan rebels have seized most parts of the capital city, Tripoli.

Journalists trapped in a Tripoli hotel say there are heavy explosions close-by, power is down, and there's gunfire outside. Journalist Thierry Meyssan, who's founder and chairman of online newspaper the Voltaire Network is in the Rixos hotel in Tripoli and says NATO forces are doing everything to back up rebels...
Rebels continued to celebrate in the Libyan capital Tripoli on Monday, the day after they pushed into the city without meeting much resistance. Smoke was seen rising on the Tripoli skyline after NATO airstrikes hit the capital, and also above the scene of a mortar blast. NATO warplanes have hit at least 40 targets in and around Tripoli in the past two days - the highest number on a single geographic location since the bombing started more than five months ago, officials said.

F. William Engdahl, author of "Full Spectrum Dominance: Totalitarian Democracy in the New World Order", thinks the struggle for Libyan oil is the real bottom line of the whole NATO operation. Rebels say they now control most of Tripoli, and have taken Libyan state TV off air. But some reports also suggest that opposition fighters have been looting private houses. Three of Gaddafi's sons are now thought to be in rebel hands. Opposition leaders say a large number of their fighters have been killed. There are reports rebels are closing in on Gaddafi's compound, but the whereabouts of the Colonel are unknown. Some rumours suggest Gaddafi may be in talks with South Africa about a possible escape route, despite denials from both sides. And NATO insists it will continue combat air patrols until all government forces surrender. Following a night of chaos in the capital, crowds have been seen in Tripoli's central square waving revolutionary flags.
