I was not at all surprised to read that officials in New York City took David Axelrod aside and told him that the city could not allow the trial of Khalid Sheik Mohammed and other 9-11 suspects to go ahead.

After a dinner in New York on Dec. 14, Steven Spinola, president of the Real Estate Board of New York, pulled aside David Axelrod, President Obama's closest adviser, to convey an urgent plea: move the 9/11 trial out of Manhattan.

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Sunday rejected Saudi claims of Tehran's interference in Yemen, urging Riyadh to revise its own policies regarding Sana'a rather than pointing fingers at others.

Libya overturns Swiss nationals jail sentence

Haiti arrests 10 US citizens for child smuggling

The Haitian police have arrested 10 US citizens after they tried to take 33 Haitian children out of the earthquake-stricken nation.

One of the suspects, who says she is the leader of an Idaho-based charity called New Life Children's Refuge, denied they had done anything wrong.

Hamas official says Fatah leaders can visit Gaza

The governor of the central Gaza Strip has told the leaders of Fatah that they can visit Gaza whenever they like.

On Saturday, Abdullah Abu Samhadana, who had chastised Fatah leaders seeking to enter Gaza on January 20, said that they can enter Gaza without hesitation whenever they intend to. "Gaza isn't owned by anybody. It is a part of Palestine and it is the homeland of all the Palestinians, including Fatah leaders," he said.

Five dead in Brooklyn fire

Five people were killed when apartments above a row of stores in Brooklyn caught fire early Saturday, authorities say.

As the interior walls collapsed, flames trapped residents on the second and third floor. About 125 firefighters were called to the scene, where they tried pulling out residents from inside two apartments above a restaurant.

Iranian researchers have announced the birth of Iran and the Middle East's first transgenic animals in the Rouyan Research Institute in Isfahan.

A transgenic animal is one that carries a foreign gene, constructed using recombinant DNA methodology, in its genome. Sheep and goats produced through this method express foreign proteins in their milk and are, therefore, considered valuable sources of protein for human therapy.

According to the study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, college students who had been involved in competitive sports since elementary school are more likely to have experienced at least a single episode of low back pain in their life than their less-competitive peers.

Ex-Georgian diplomat imprisoned over espionage

Georgian political scientist and former diplomat Vakhtang Maisaya has been sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of spying for Russia during the August 2008 war.

US plans to reduce energy use

The White House announced that the federal government has planned taking steps to reduce its energy use and heat-trapping emissions.

The US government is the largest user of electricity and fuel in the country and if the plan reaches goal, the emission will reduce to 28 percent by 2020 compared with 2008 levels. It would also save USD 8 billion to USD 11 billion in energy costs over the next decade.

Assassins hid in Israeli minister convoy: Hamas

Hamas says the assassins of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, one of the Palestinian resistance movement's senior figures, could have used an Israeli ministerial convoy as a cover.

Commenting on the last week assassination of the 50-year-old co-founder of Hamas' armed wing Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades in Dubai, senior member of the Hamas leadership Mahmoud al-Zahar said the perpetrators could have accompanied Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau's convoy into the United Arab Emirates.
