Last year, Barack Obama, the US president, called Afghanistan the new frontline in America's fight against al-Qaeda linked groups. Now Obama has explicitly linked the group al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula with the attempt to blow up a US-bound passenger jet on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, authorities in Denmark say a man who tried to kill a cartoonist has "close relations" with Islamic fighters in Somalia - the latest in growing international alarm about threats coming from new directions ...

Bin Laden's son hails Iran attempts about his sister

The son of al-Qaeda kingpin Osama Bin Laden thanks Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria for securing the return of his 17-year-old sister to the Arab peninsula.

Omar bin Laden, who reportedly broke with his father before the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001, said Friday that he is relieved and glad to have his sister, Iman, back in Saudi Arabia where she belongs.

Tainted dairy shuts down company in China

Chinese authorities have yet again closed down another dairy factory and arrested three of its executives over the factory's production of melamine-contaminated milk.

The Shanghai Daily newspaper on Friday published the results of a recent probe showing that the Shanghai Panda Dairy Co. Ltd. was using contaminated milk substances, containing high levels of melamine which can cause kidney stones and may lead to kidney failure.

Glowing wallpaper to spell the end for light bulbs

A company based in Wales is developing the first glowing wallpaper that will replace the regular incandescent light bulbs.

The new technology involves applying a special chemical coating to wallpaper and adding a small electrical current to produce light evenly throughout a room.

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki says British efforts to disrupt calm in Iran are futile attempts of a "frightened" enemy.

"Enemies are afraid of the anti-oppression movement Iran has started in the world. So, they are constantly scheming to stop it from spreading in the Muslim world and elsewhere," Mottaki said in Iran's northeastern Province of Gorgan on Friday.

Rezaei: Mousavi's 'retreat' can help bring unity

In a letter to Iran's most senior official, former presidential candidate Mohsen Rezaei says Mir-Hossein Mousavi has retreated from his stance on the government.

"Although he moved later than he should have, Mousavi has retreated from the position of denying the legitimacy of Mr. Ahmadinejad's government," Rezaei said in a Friday letter to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Iran plans to set up a gas station in its border with Afghanistan to provide Afghans with gasoline, an Iranian official says.

Ali-Mohammad Azad, the governor general of Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan Province, says the move is aimed at tackling the problem of fuel smuggling into Afghanistan.

A security guard has been arrested in connection with the theft of a painting by the Impressionist artist Edgar Degas which was stolen from a museum in Marseilles in southern France, a public prosecutor says.

"A night watchman at the Musee Cantini has been apprehended in connection with the disappearance of Edgar Degas's very expensive painting," Marseille public prosecutor Jacques Dallest said on Friday.

Bomb threat grounds plane in southeastern US

A Northwest Airlines plane has made an emergency landing in Nashville after the pilot found a suspicious package, which turned out to contain a harmless Christmas ornament.

Flight 2364, headed from Detroit in the Midwest region of the United States to Orlando in Florida, landed at Nashville International Airport in the US state of Tennessee at about 8 a.m. local time (1400 GMT).

Drug kingpins kill seven policemen in Iran

Armed drug traffickers have killed at least seven Iranian police officers in heavy clashes near the eastern borders of the country.

The Police commander of the Southern Khorasan Province, Hamid Sharafi, told reporters Friday that the slain policemen will be put to rest in the holy city of Mashad.

Foreign banks awaiting Iran's green light

A senior Iranian official says five foreign banks are awaiting approval of a law in the Majlis (Parliament) to open branches in Iran.

"The proposal for setting up of five foreign banks is on my table but the fifth clause of article 44 (of the constitution) does not permit their operations," said Behrouz Alishiri, the head of the Organization for Investment, Economic and Technical Assistance of Iran (OIETAI).

US President Barack Obama obtained intelligence on aviation threats prior to a recent aerial drama in which a passenger attempted to 'blow up' a US airliner, a report says.

Obama was warned of looming aerial threats in a 'high-level' pre-Christmas briefing by US intelligence agencies, the American weekly newsmagazine, Newsweek, reported on Friday.

Afghan parliament starts voting on new cabinet

The Wolesi Jirga, the Lower House of the Afghan parliament, has started the voting process to show or deny confidence in minister-designates proposed by President Hamid Karzai.

During the process, which began on Saturday morning and would last several hours, the Afghan MPs would approve or reject 24 ministerial nominees introduced in late December by Mr. Karzai.

Man trying to kill Danish cartoonist detained

Danish police have arrested a Somali man who was allegedly trying to break into the home of a cartoonist whose 2005 caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) outraged Muslims.

The 28-year-old man, armed with a knife and axe, failed to get into Kurt Westergaard's home in the town of Aarhus late on Friday (January 1) and was shot in the leg and hand after he threw the axe at a policeman, a police spokesman said.

In Pakistan, more civilians fall victim to US drones

The civilian mortalities from US missile attacks on the Pakistani soil in 2009 indicate a threefold increase in compared to the previous year.

Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones to carry out the attacks, the US Central Intelligence Agency, in cooperation with the Pentagon, are responsible for more than 700 civilian deaths in Pakistan this year, reports say.

US charges 3 Africans with narco-terrorism

Three drug traffickers arrested in Ghana have been extradited to the United States on charges of narco-terrorism and conspiracy to provide material support to al-Qaeda.

Oumar Issa, Harouna Toure and Idriss Abelraham, all in their 30s and citizens of the Republic of Mali in West Africa, were caught with five kilograms of cocaine in Ghana. They are accused of planning to traffic the drugs across the Sahara Desert to Spain.

Somali pirates have seized a Singapore-flagged tanker in the Gulf of Aden, a European Union counter-piracy force says.

The MV Pramoni with a crew of 17 Indonesians, five Chinese, one Nigerian and one Vietnamese, was en route to Kandla in India, the European Union Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR) said in a statement on Friday.

Colombian forces have killed 18 FARC rebels and captured another nine in a surprise assault in the center of the country.

About 100 members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were reportedly caught off guard while celebrating the New Year. Colombian officials would not confirm the strike.

Iran charges 7 rioters in connection with unrest

Iran's judicial body will put on trial seven of the rioters, who were arrested following Sunday's unrest in Tehran on the day of Ashura.

Mudslide kills 15 on island south west of Rio

A mudslide has struck a small luxury hotel filled with New Year travelers on an island south west of Rio de Janeiro, killing at least 15 people.

Heavy rain caused a hillside to give way, bringing mud, boulders and trees down on part of the hotel and three houses on the island of Ilha Grande in Rio state.
