China manufacturing growth accelerates

China's manufacturing activity has performed at its fastest pace in more than five years for December, a survey of purchasing executives shows.

A purchasing managers' index (PMI) released Monday by HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics demonstrated that Chinese conditions had risen to a seasonally adjusted 56.1 from 55.7 in November.

UN suspends food aid to one million Somalis

The United Nations World Food Program said Tuesday it was stopping aid distribution to about one million people in southern Somalia because of ''unacceptable'' demands and threats by armed groups.

The World Food Program (WFP) cited "rising threats and attacks on humanitarian operations", as well as "a string of unacceptable demands from armed groups" as the reasons behind the suspension.

CIA base bomber 'was double agent'

A suicide bomber who killed eight people when he attacked a US base in Afghanistan has been identified as a "double agent" working for Jordanian intelligence, according to US media and intelligence reports.

Al Jazeera sources in Afghanistan on Tuesday said that the man, identified as Hammam Khalil al-Balawi, had been brought to the base in the eastern Afghan province of Khost, by car, from across the border in Pakistan.

In their refusal to ask the question of why, really, Muslims are being radicalized, President Obama and Prime Minister Brown are no different from their immediate predecessors.

When George "Dubya" Bush and Tony Blair ruled the world and were pressing ahead with their "war on terrorism", I used to ask this question: Are they ignorant of history and don't know what they are doing and therefore stupid, or do they and/or some of the powerful vested interests which pull their strings want a Clash of Civilizations, Judeo-Christian v Islamic?

UN Chief: Situation in Yemen, worrying

The UN secretary-general has voiced concern about the humanitarian situation in Yemen, where fighting continues between Houthis fighters and the Yemeni army.

New Year freeze claims more lives in EU

An estimated 23 people across Europe have lost their lives over the New Year, as arctic-like temperatures and heavy snow continue to plague the continent.

In Poland, at least 13 people have frozen to death since the start of the year after a bitter cold wave dropped temperatures to minus 25 degrees Celsius (minus 13 Fahrenheit).

Israel presses ahead on settlements

Israeli officials have pushed forward a project to build four new apartment blocks in occupied East Jerusalem, a move likely to heighten tensions with Palestinians amid US efforts to restart peace talks.

The chairwoman of Israel's centrist Kadima political party, Tzipi Livni, has leveled harsh accusations against her arch-rival Shaul Mofaz, saying that he 'is trying to destroy' her party.

"Mofaz wants to replace me. It could be legitimate when the time is right, but not when he is still deep inside the primaries, which took place a year ago and results are still being tallied. What he basically wants is a second exam date," Ynet quoted Livni as saying on Monday.

Iran's Esfandiar oilfield is to be developed as soon as talks over a finance investment in the oilfield with Qatar's National Bank (QNB) are finalized, Iranian official says.

"A Malaysian contractor is to take hold of the project" in the Persian Gulf, said the head of Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC), Mahmoud Zirakchianzadeh, in an interview with Iran's ISNA news agency.

Saudi warplanes keep hitting northern Yemen

Saudi fighter jets have launched another round of aerial bombardment of Houthi positions in northern parts of Yemen along the border with the oil-rich kingdom.

According to a statement released by the fighters on Monday, Saudi forces carried out 22 aerial raids on al-Malaheet, Shada and Jebel Razih regions as well as villages in close proximity to Jebel al-Ramih.

Blasts leave 15 civilians wounded in Mosul

At least fifteen people have obtained injuries in two separate bombing attacks across Iraq's third largest city, Mosul.

Huge oil spill hits China's Yellow River

An oil spill has 'seriously polluted' two branches of China's Yellow River amid concerns of further contamination in the country's tainted drinking water resources.

A pipeline operated by oil giant China National Petroleum Corp. ruptured on Wednesday, releasing up to 150,000 liters (40,000 gallons) of diesel into the Chishui and Wei rivers, which flow into the Yellow River.

CIA bomber a Jordan 'double agent'

A suicide bomber who attacked a CIA base in Afghanistan last week has been identified as a Jordanian doctor working as a "double agent", US news outlets reports.

American media on Monday quoted former US government officials as saying Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi was working for Jordanian intelligence in support of US efforts against al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

Al-Balawi reportedly offered intelligence officers in Khost province new information about al-Qaeda and Ayman al-Zawahiri, the organisation's second-in-command, before arriving at the US base and detonating his explosives.

US failed to enforce Iran sanctions: Report

While the White House is trying to convince other countries to impose fresh sanctions against Iran, a new report shows the US has failed to enforce its previous 'complex' sanctions.

The Wall Street Journal, citing a report by the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control, said that an analysis of US shipping records show Washington's sanctions against Iran have become so "numerous and complex" that they have become difficult to enforce.

A US federal court has upheld the sentence of life imprisonment given to Zacarias Moussaoui, who is accused of collusion with Al-Qaeda in the 9/11 attacks.
